"Constitutional Debates in the Century of Türkiye" Programme Held at OMU

The programme titled "Constitutional Debates in the Century of Türkiye", with the previous Chief Ombudsman and former Trabzon Member of Parliament Şeref Malkoç taking part as speaker, was held in collaboration between the Ondokuz Mayıs University (OMU) Ali Fuad Başgil Faculty of Law and the Strategy and Policy Research Society.

The event, held in the Distance Education Centre (UZEM) Conference Hall, was conducted in an academic and institutional setting thanks to the technological infrastructure and the space UZEM provides. The programme examined the importance of the constitution for the democratic system, for fundamental rights and freedoms and for the rule of law.

Speaking at the event, Şeref Malkoç stressed that constitution-making processes should be conducted on the basis of social consensus and stated that Türkiye needs a new, civilian constitution. He said that at a time when global and regional developments are accelerating, a strong and independent legal order in keeping with the requirements of the age is decisive for lasting peace and stability.

The programme was held as part of the three-day "Law Academy" events organised by the OMU Strategy and Policy Research Society. Within the academy, constitutional jurisdiction, the individual application mechanism and the place of the prosecution service in criminal proceedings were examined in separate sessions.

The programme, followed with interest by students and the academic community, ended after a question-and-answer session.
